Guitar Lessons for Beginners
Hi, I’m Gail. I teach private guitar lessons for kids and adults in Frederick, Maryland, with a simple philosophy: learning guitar should be fun.
If you’re a complete beginner, you’re in the right place. I’ll help you learn the fundamentals, understand your instrument, and start playing music you actually enjoy, without pressure, intimidation, or guilt about being perfect.

My “No Guilt” Approach to Learning Guitar
Learning guitar shouldn’t feel like a chore. It should be something you look forward to.
In this short video, I talk about my teaching style, why I believe having fun is such an important part of learning, and what I mean by my “No Guilt” approach to guitar lessons.
Whether you’re looking for guitar lessons for your child or you’ve always wanted to learn yourself, I want you to feel comfortable starting exactly where you are.
Guitar Lessons Should Be Fun
Do you want to learn to play guitar but worry it will be too hard, too technical, or too boring? Is your child asking for guitar lessons and you’re not sure where to start?
Start here.
The guitar is personal, portable, and incredibly rewarding to learn. You can take it with you almost anywhere, and from the very beginning there are ways to make real music while you build the skills that will help you keep growing.
My job is to make sure you learn those skills without losing the fun that made you want to pick up a guitar in the first place.
A Comfortable Place for Beginners
I love teaching beginners because I get to be there for all those first moments: the first chord, the first song, the first time something suddenly clicks.
There’s no expectation that you should already know what you’re doing. You’re coming to lessons because you want to learn, and I’ll guide you one step at a time.
With kids, I especially enjoy watching them grow with music over the years. Many of my students begin when they’re young and continue learning with me through middle school, high school, and beyond.
That long relationship is one of the things I value most about teaching.
Learn the Fundamentals Without Losing the Fun
Before you become a rock star, it helps to understand what you’re actually playing.
I teach acoustic and classical guitar methods because they help students develop good technique and a strong musical foundation. Those fundamentals make it much easier to explore other styles of music as your skills and interests grow.
We’ll work on things like chords, notes, rhythm, technique, songs, and musical understanding, but I don’t believe every student should be taught in exactly the same way. I adjust lessons to the student, their goals, and the music that keeps them interested.
Yes, You Can Learn to Read Music
Reading music doesn’t have to feel like drudgery, and it definitely doesn’t need to resemble the old stereotype of a strict music teacher rapping your knuckles.
I help students learn to read and understand music in a way that connects with what they’re playing. For children, it can be an important part of building musical confidence and independence. For adults, it can open up a whole new way of understanding the instrument.
The goal isn’t to bury you in theory. The goal is to give you more freedom as a musician.
No Shame. No Guilt. Just Progress.
Life happens.
Kids have school, activities, homework, and busy weeks. Adults have work, families, travel, and plenty of other things competing for their time.
I want my students to practice, because practice helps you improve, but I don’t believe guilt makes anyone a better musician. If you’ve had a busy week, we start from where you are and keep moving forward.
Progress matters, but so does enjoying the process.
Guitar Lessons for Kids
I love working with young beginners and helping them build good habits, musical skills, and confidence from the start.
If your child has been asking to learn guitar, I’ll help you figure out whether they’re ready, what kind of guitar they need, and how to get started without making the whole thing feel overwhelming.

Guitar Lessons for Adults
Maybe you’ve wanted to play guitar for years but never quite got around to it. Maybe there’s already a guitar sitting somewhere in your house waiting for you.
You’re not too late, and you don’t need any musical experience to begin. I work with adult beginners at a comfortable pace, with plenty of encouragement and no expectation that you should already know more than you do.

Why Learn Guitar With Gail?
When you choose a guitar teacher, you’re choosing more than someone who can play the instrument. You’re choosing the person you or your child will spend time learning with week after week.
I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, trying again, and enjoying the small wins along the way. I teach the fundamentals seriously, but I don’t believe lessons need to feel serious all the time.
Music should be something that adds joy to your life.
